NEW YORK, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ — Virgin Records has announced details of the upcoming soundtrack companion to Paramount Pictures’ new film, Alfie. “ALFIE — MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE” features thirteen original songs written, performed and produced by Mick Jagger and Dave Stewart. The 15-track collection arrives in stores on October 19th.
“ALFIE — MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE” is comprised of new songs expressly written for the film, penned and performed by Jagger and award-winning producer/songwriter/musician Stewart. “Old Habits Die Hard,” the album’s first single, sees Mick and Dave joined by none other than Sheryl Crow. Elsewhere on the record, R&B-colored tracks such as “Blind Leading The Blind” feature Jagger’s unmistakable lead vocals, while blues-inflected instrumental tracks like “New York Hustle” and “Standing In The Rain” feature the legendary rockers showing off their inimitable skills on harmonica and guitar. The featured instrumental tracks are taken from the picture’s original score, composed entirely by Jagger and Stewart (with John Powell).

Joss Stone Mind, Body & Soul (S-Curve)

When Joss Stone opens her mouth and sings with the power of soul sisters three times her age, it’s hard to imagine that she’s seventeen — much less a white chick from Devon, England. She’s already a sensation because of The Soul Sessions, a covers album released while Mind, Body & Soul was still in the works, and this one should push her profile even higher. It’s full of stunning examples of the kind of vocal dynamics no training could improve. Even though contributions by R&B legends Betty Wright, Lamont Dozier, Desmond Child and Nile Rodgers give the album bit too much of a disco lean during the somewhat overproduced first half, mid-way through — beginning with the gospel/reggae-ish “Less Is More” Stone — gets the room she needs and unleashes the gritty emotions that could get her crowned as another queen of soul.

If Joss Stone didn’t exist, someone would have to invent her. Frighteningly young, incredibly photogenic and blessed with a remarkable voice, she’s a marketing man’s dream. Debut album The Soul Sessions caught everyone by surprise, with Stone’s record company being keen to sell the record on the basis of the songs alone – even going as far to obscure her features on the sleeve.

Yet with the cat well and truly out of the bag now, Mind Body & Soul is an opportunity for Stone to prove that she can live up to the hype. While the debut consisted of an inspired range of cover versions, 12 of the 14 tracks on the follow-up were co-written by Stone herself.

NEW YORK (Billboard) – “The next big thing.” It’s a phrase that Joss Stone has heard quite a few times during the past year.

Since S-Curve Records released the British singer’s “The Soul Sessions,” an EP of classic soul covers, in 2003, the critical acclaim has come fast and furious.

But with her full-length debut, “Mind Body & Soul,” the 17-year-old Stone seems unfazed by all the hype.
