Throughout Gap’s history, we’ve had the pleasure to partner with many well-known celebrities, musicians and rising stars. Sarah Jessica Parker, however, was the first celebrity with which we have enjoyed a multi-season partnership. In mid-2004 we signed a three season contract with Sarah Jessica, and from Fall 2004 to Spring 2005 she has connected with women of all ages to help them understand the versatility of our products and our spirit of individual style.

For Summer 2005 we will rely on models to communicate our product story of white denim. Our television commercial will feature the music of Joss Stone — she will also appear in the commercial. We’re very excited to be partnering with such a dynamic, up-and-coming talent.

While Gap will always seek partnerships with celebrities, musicians and rising stars, we don’t have any future plans to sign a single person to a multi-season deal like the unique and special relationship we enjoyed with Sarah Jessica.

A sure sign it’s finally spring? Those very pink-hued, (sometimes sickly) sweet musical ads for the Gap starring American darling Sarah Jessica Parker and her rendition of the Broadway tune “I Enjoy Being a Girl.”

But the British press is reporting that S.J.P., who’s done three Gap campaigns so far, will do no more. It appears that Gap’s face and voice are to be replaced by English teen sensation Joss Stone, who’s currently in negotiations with the khaki-maker.

According to London’s Sunday Times, the Gap, which had previously used Madonna and Demi Moore, wants to capture the teen market by using the 17-year-old soul singer, who scored a hit last year with “Fell in Love with a Boy,” a reworking of the White Stripes’ “Fell in Love with a Girl.”

So how does Parker, who turns 40 Friday, feel? Her rep tells the Sunday Times that the Gap separation was amicable. But over at the Daily Mail, things are depicted much more darkly: Citing an unnamed source (but of course!), the Brit tab says an embittered Parker feels snubbed, dissed, dumped. Supposedly, she is especially peeved that her replacement is a virtual nobody.

Joss Stone did not win any of the three Grammy Awards, including best new artist, that she was nominated for this year. But Grammy officials say they believe that she achieved at least one distinction at last month’s awards show: First Artist to Perform Barefoot. The 17-year-old Ms. Stone, who’s known for going shoeless during her concerts, joins a tradition of powerful female singers who prefer to barefoot it.

Why: “Because I do not want to fall over and embarrass myself.” At 5-foot-10, “I am tall enough already.”

Footnote: “Once I had to sing with a piece of glass in my foot on ‘The Late Late Show.’ I had to stand on the side of my foot the whole time I was singing.” -New York Times

Blond Brit Joss Stone stole the show at the Grammys and now she’s stealing the Gap ads from Sarah Jessica Parker. Gap spokesman Sean Krebs confirmed to a New York Post reporter that the sexy soul siren is its new spokeswoman. “We are shooting her in Los Angeles this week for the summer 2005 television campaign,” Krebs said. “Joss Stone will be prominently featured and we are very excited.” The ads hit the airwaves on April 28. -Seattle Post-Intelligencer
