It doesn’t take long for a meeting with Joss Stone to quickly descend into the surreal.
There she is, on a sofa in a Midtown recording studio lounge, watching music videos, chatting about her unlikely career as a soul singer, when her attention gets distracted . . .
By her own voice.

Not only is the Chris Martin machine unstoppable in terms of sales, but the soft-spoken, British wuss-rocker has been crowned The Sexiest Male Vegetarian Of The Year by People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA). British soul-singing teen Joss Stone was voted tops in the female category. The winners beat over 180 other vegetarian celebrities, including Avril Lavigne, Pamela Anderson, K-OS and most of Good Charlotte, for the title.
Coldplay’s Martin and his wife Gwyneth Paltrow have been vocal about their vegetarian lifestyle. Not only did they slap their baby with the name Apple, they celebrated her first birthday with a vegan birthday cake from Moby’s meat-free New York restaurant. Stone, an admitted animal lover, grew up with them on her family’s farm in England and often sang to the livestock. She is also known for drinking soy milk during interviews.
This was her first year in the competition. Martin was in the running last year, but was trounced by Andre 3000 of Outkast. Though PETA has held the voting for five years, this survey marks the first time they’ve directed it to a younger audience on their spin-off, youth-oriented PETA2. A nice gesture for sure, but what can explain the presence of Woody Harrelson in the polls? – Chart Attack Canada

The former Nirvana drummer was so impressed by the 18-year-old’s sensational vocal range, he tracked her down and spent the afternoon with her, planning a suitable duet.
An insider says, “Dave adores Joss. He’s totally blown away by her vocal abilities and made a direct beeline for her when he spotted her backstage at a gig.
“They hung out together for the whole afternoon and if they can arrange their busy schedules to suit, there’ll definitely be some form of collaboration in the future.”

Teenage soul singer JOSS STONE strolled on stage barefoot and grinning, then launched into Super, Super Love.
The crowd loved the 18-year-old’s husky vocal, which contrasted with her girlie chat and giggles.
She wanted us to sing Fell In Love With A Boy so much that she got down in among the crowd then she sang the rudest song she’s written Don’t You Wanna Ride.
She told the crowd: ‘You guys are wicked. I’m coming back here.’ – Glasgow Sunday Mail

Joss Stone, it may surprise you to know, doesn’t exist. Since the teenage singer has been seen just about everywhere in the last couple of weeks on the telly duetting with James Brown on Jonathan Ross’s chat show or appearing in front of millions (or is it billions) at Live8 this information may seem a little, well, curious. But that’s what she tells me. At least some of the time, she insists, she is not Joss Stone.
There is an explanation. What she means is that Joss Stone the singer the new Aretha, Dusty or Janis (delete according to your musical preference) is not the same person as Joss Stoker, the English rose discovered six years ago on a TV talent show; a 12-year-old child with the voice of a middle-aged black woman who has, you know, suffered in life.
Joss Stone, it seems, only appears when Joss Stoker a slightly shy, full-on giggly teenager according to all previous interviews takes her shoes off, walks onto a stage and picks up a microphone. Joss Stone is the confident one, the one who could stand up and sing in front of 80,000 at Glastonbury a couple of weeks ago, who did her bit to save the world at Live8 last week and who will perform in front of the massed hordes of T in the Park today.
