The ever-popular Sanremo song festival, in its 57th year, is now in full swing until 3 March.

The musical competition at Sanremo’s Teatro Ariston is conducted by Pippo Baudo, one of television’s most famous television presenters who has conducted the festival for 12 years, and Michelle Hunziker, Swiss born soubrette and television personality. This year the categories (from “men”, “women”, “youth” and “groups” in 2006) have been whittled down to only two categories: one for emerging young talents and the other for the established “champions”. Over the evenings contestants are gradually eliminated, until there is only one winner left in each category. Television viewers will be able to phone in and vote for their favourite artists.

Singer Liza Minnelli and Spanish actress Penélope Cruz are among the guests participating in the programme. Other international guests include singers Norah Jones and John Legend as well as musical bands Scissor Sisters, Joss Stone and Take That. Some of the best-selling Italian artists are also performing, such as Tiziano Ferro, Renato Zero, Gianna Nannini and Elisa. For more information, visit www.sanremo.rai.it.

From MTV.com:

Grammy winner Joss Stone, who was also a presenter at the Brit Awards, told MTV Europe that she has “no idea” why she scored a golden trophy on Sunday. “I just sang a hook,” she said of her contribution to Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals winner “Family Affair,” by Sly and the Family Stone, which also featured John Legend and Van Hunt. “It was Randy Jackson who won the Grammy. He was the one who made the project.” Stone says that when she found out about the win, she couldn’t even share the excitement. “I called my mom, and she didn’t pick up the phone. I was like, ‘Mum, pick up the phone!’ I left her a message.”

By Lina Lecaro / LA Weekly

Though it was billed as “an intimate performance,” Joss Stone’s show at House of Blues two Wednesdays ago was anything but. The place was so jam-packed even the (overpriced) parking lot was full. We managed to find something several blocks away, which meant a hilly hike to the show, but it was worth it for the visual alone: Miss Stone has undergone what can only be called a total transformation. Gone are the young Brit’s Stevie Nicks–y frocks and long blond locks, replaced by big magenta curls, a sequined micro-mini dress and gobs of glitzy makeup. Girlfriend’s become a dreamgirl to rival Beyoncé: “I’m in a glittery mood with this album,” said the foxy 19-year-old as she threw sparkle dust out to the crowd. That may be, but the cuts off her “reinvention” record, Introducing Joss Stone, remain funked-out and soul-soused, with nothing to suggest she’s gone too mainstream (soundwise, anyway). Stone’s Aretha-like vocals even seem to have ripened, and just to prove she hasn’t completely abandoned her granola-girl ways, Stone was quick to slip off her metallic platform heels early in the set, prancing barefoot as she bounced to the beats of her band. The new disc comes out March 20.
